ITMO Registry

Welcome to
ITMO Registry

“Secure, Transparent ITMO Registry for Article 6 Compliance. Track, Transfer, and Manage Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs) with full Paris Agreement integrity, corresponding adjustments, and UNFCCC alignment.”

About us

ITMO Registry (ITMO) is a pioneering organisation headquartered in London, United Kingdom, dedicated to transforming global carbon emissions reporting and management. Our mission is to deliver a reliable, secure platform for real-time emissions tracking, thereby enhancing transparency and accountability in carbon credit trading.

ITMO is part of the GEM Group. Global Environmental Markets (GEM) was founded in 2009 and is led by CEO Wayne Sharpe. GEM’s registry system enables signatories to the Paris Agreement to trade carbon credits under Article 6.2. The Group also owns and operates Carbon Trade eXchange (CTX), an award-winning and globally recognised platform for voluntary carbon markets.

What is an ITMO

ITMO Registry ® – The New Home for Voluntary and Article 6.2 Credits

An ITMO (Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcome) is a UN-backed carbon credit representing one metric tonne of CO₂ (or CO₂ equivalent) reduced or removed. These credits are authorized for transfer between countries under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement and are used to help nations meet their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). A key feature is the use of “corresponding adjustments,” which safeguard environmental integrity by preventing double counting.

ITMOs are produced by the same projects as Voluntary credits, All Credits are issued from operational projects with 3rd party Monitoring and Verification reports that confirm the emission reductions via Avoidance or Removal based on tons of CO2e. A voluntary credit may only become an ITMO if it is approved and meets the Nations UNFCCC  Paris Article 6 requirements.

Article 6.2 and 6.4 of the Paris Agreement facilitate international carbon trading to meet NDC targets, with 6.2 allowing flexible, decentralized bilateral trading of ITMOs, while 6.4 establishes a centralized, UN-supervised mechanism for high-quality credits. Key differences involve Article 6.2 (Decentralized Cooperative Approaches)

  • Definition: Provides a flexible, decentralized framework for countries to trade emission reductions, known as Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs), via bilateral or multilateral agreements.
  • Governance: Country-led; participants are responsible for reporting and ensuring authorized, high-quality units.

ITMO Registry leverages cutting-edge technology Built by Global Environ Markets (GEM) to establish itself as a global leader in delivering user-friendly, fully transparent, and verifiable carbon credits. Each carbon credit issued by ITMO originates from rigorously vetted projects that undergo comprehensive approval including Project Design review and independent third-party Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) processes, guaranteeing the highest quality of verified Global Carbon Credits (GCCs). Purchasers of ITMO carbon credits benefit from direct connection to the underlying projects and the diverse co-benefits or SDGs these initiatives generate.

Buyers of Global Carbon Credits (GCCs) may transact directly through the Registry (Over The Counter or OTC) or electronically via our strategic partner: Carbon Trade eXchange (CTX). Upon purchase, buyers receive certificates along with online verification links, acknowledging their voluntary commitment to carbon offsetting. Project developers can sell credits either directly from their ITMO Registry accounts or via brokers on CTX or other trading platforms.
